Meet Your Therapist
Josh Otani, LMFT
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist & Founder, Big Valley Therapy — Sandy, Utah
Josh is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in betrayal trauma, couples therapy, and trauma-informed care for individuals and couples across the Salt Lake Valley. He is trained in EMDR and uses Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help clients move from emotional survival toward lasting healing and connection.
Therapy is most effective when you feel genuinely understood. At Big Valley Therapy, you work with one dedicated therapist who knows your history and goals — not a rotation of providers.

Less reactivity in relationships
Improved communication with partners
Greater self-awareness and clarity
A stronger sense of safety and connection
Feeling more like yourself again
How we work
Evidence-Based Therapy Approaches
We use research-supported approaches tailored to your specific needs, history, and goals. Each method is chosen because of its strong clinical evidence for trauma and relationship healing.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Helps process distressing memories and reduce emotional intensity — without reliving every painful detail repeatedly.
IFS
Internal Family Systems
Helps you understand and heal internal emotional patterns — including self-criticism, shame, and inner conflict — with curiosity instead of judgment.
EFT
Emotionally Focused Therapy
Strengthens emotional connection and attachment security — particularly effective for couples, relationship repair, and trust rebuilding.
