What we offer
What Is Individual Therapy?
Individual therapy is a one-on-one counseling space where you meet privately with a therapist to work through emotional struggles, stress, life transitions, and relationship pain. At Big Valley Therapy, we offer both in-person sessions in Sandy, Utah and telehealth individual therapy statewide.
You are not judged or rushed. Therapy gives you a structured, private space to explore what is happening internally — at your own pace and on your own terms.
Therapy gives you space to explore:
- Thoughts and emotions that feel hard to make sense of
- Patterns in relationships that keep repeating
- Stress and overwhelm that feel constant or unmanageable
- Self-worth and identity after painful experiences
- Personal goals and growth toward a healthier version of yourself
Many people begin therapy when they feel anxious, emotionally drained, stuck, or uncertain about what to do next. The goal is to help you feel more stable, confident, and connected to yourself.

Our clinical framework
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Therapy
At Big Valley Therapy, we use a trauma-informed approach — meaning therapy focuses first on emotional safety, pacing, and nervous system regulation before anything else. You are never pushed faster than your mind and body can handle.
Safety first
Every session begins with your emotional and physical safety as the foundation
Your pace
We move at the speed your nervous system can handle — never faster
Reduce shame
We help you understand your reactions with compassion instead of judgment
Many current struggles are shaped by past experiences that left a mark on how you think, feel, and respond. These may include:
Betrayal or relational trauma
Childhood wounds or neglect
Grief and loss
Emotionally painful relationships
Long-term stress or burnout
Major life disruptions or transitions
How we work
Evidence-Based Therapy Approaches
We tailor therapy based on your goals, personality, and needs. Each therapy plan is adjusted to your pace — we draw from several evidence-based approaches depending on what will be most effective for you.
Helps process distressing memories and reduce emotional intensity connected to painful past experiences — without requiring you to talk through every detail repeatedly. Particularly effective for trauma, anxiety, and phobias.
Helps you understand different emotional parts of yourself — including protective parts, wounded parts, and the core self — with curiosity and compassion instead of shame or self-criticism.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Helpful for attachment wounds, emotional connection, and relationship patterns. EFT helps you understand how early attachment experiences shape your current emotional responses and relationships.
Mindfulness and Grounding Skills
Supports nervous system regulation and reduces stress and anxiety in daily life. These practical tools help you stay present and calm when difficult emotions or situations arise.
Relationship pain
Individual Therapy for Relationship Stress
Many people seek individual therapy because of relationship pain. Whether the relationship is ongoing or has ended, therapy provides a private space to process emotions, understand patterns, and make grounded decisions without pressure.
Repeated conflict or communication breakdown
Trust issues or emotional distance
Breakup recovery or grief after a relationship
Betrayal trauma from infidelity or deception
People-pleasing patterns or fear of conflict
Fear of abandonment or difficulty expressing needs
If trust has been broken or betrayal is a concern, you may also benefit from:
Betrayal Trauma Therapy in Utah
For individuals navigating infidelity, secrecy, or relational betrayal
Couples Therapy in Utah
For rebuilding trust and emotional connection with a partner
Men's issues
Individual Therapy for Men's Issues and Compulsive Behaviors
Some clients seek therapy for behaviors that feel difficult to stop or control — behaviors that often started as a way to cope with stress, loneliness, or emotional pain, but have since created shame, secrecy, and distance in their most important relationships.
Compulsive pornography use or secrecy
Shame and self-judgment
Emotional avoidance or numbness
Intimacy struggles or fear of vulnerability
Stress-driven coping habits
Disconnection from partner or family
Therapy helps address both the behavior and the deeper emotional pain beneath it — not through judgment or willpower alone, but through genuine understanding and sustainable change.

Specialized support for compulsive pornography use and related shame

Start Individual Therapy in Utah
You do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Many people begin simply knowing that something feels off — and that is enough.
At Big Valley Therapy, we provide a calm, respectful, and non-judgmental space where you can heal at your own pace — both in person in Sandy, Utah and via telehealth across the state.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a diagnosis to start individual therapy? +
No. You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to begin therapy. Many people start simply because something feels off — they feel stuck, stressed, or disconnected. That is reason enough to reach out.
How long does individual therapy take? +
Timelines vary depending on your goals and what you are working through. Some clients notice meaningful shifts within 8–12 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term support. We pace therapy entirely to your needs — there is no fixed timeline.
What is trauma-informed therapy? +
Trauma-informed therapy means that emotional safety, pacing, and nervous system regulation come first. Rather than pushing you to process difficult material before you are ready, we build a foundation of stability first — then move at whatever pace feels manageable.
What is the difference between individual therapy and couples therapy? +
Individual therapy is a private, one-on-one space focused entirely on your own emotional experience, patterns, and goals. Couples therapy involves both partners and focuses on the relationship dynamic between them. Many people do both — individual therapy alongside couples therapy — for the most comprehensive support.
What therapy approaches do you use? +
We primarily use EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and mindfulness-based approaches. Your therapy plan is tailored to your goals, personality, and pace — we never take a one-size-fits-all approach.
Do you offer telehealth individual therapy in Utah? +
Yes. We offer both in-person sessions at our Sandy, Utah office and telehealth therapy for clients anywhere in the state. Many clients find telehealth just as effective and more convenient for their schedule.
Is therapy confidential? +
Yes. Everything you share in individual therapy is confidential. There are a small number of legally required exceptions — such as imminent safety concerns — but your therapist will explain these before you begin. You can also review our Notice of Privacy Practices for full details.
How do I get started? +
The easiest first step is scheduling a free 15-minute consultation. This gives you a chance to share what's going on, ask questions, and get a feel for whether Big Valley Therapy is the right fit — before committing to anything.
